MCHCE Mission
The Montana Council for History and Civics Education (MCHCE) is dedicated to the promotion of history and civics education in the state of Montana. This includes supporting history curriculum through evaluating state standards, curriculum and assessment; promoting quality pre-service preparation for history teachers; and working to strengthen the content of K-12 history and civics education in Montana schools. MCHCE is committed to providing professional development for state history teachers through annual MEA/MFT educators’ conferences and providing regional and local workshops.

Linda Babcock, Longfellow Elementary School
Linda is very involved in the Montana and Bozeman community. She volunteers with Eaglemount, Beall Park Art Center, Special Olympics, and the Sweet Pea Festival of the Arts. She has received the Bozeman Historic Preservation Award for Excellence, the Gold Star Teacher’s Award, and was also awarded the 2003, 14th Annual Montana Statehood Centennial Bell History Teacher of the Year Award. She has just returned to the classroom after taking a one-year sabbatical from her 35 years of teaching 5th grade to write Yellowstone biographies using primary sources from the Yellowstone Heritage and Research Center.

Michael Herdina, Harlowton High School
Michael is a 7-12 educator and boys basketball coach. He teaches World History, Junior High Spanish, 7th Grade English, Journalism, Communication Arts and Spanish 1. He is the assistant high school boys basketball coach and the junior high boys basketball coach, and he advises the newspaper, yearbook, and the senior class.

B. Derek Strahn, Bozeman High School
Derek Strahn teaches AP US History and AP American Studies at Bozeman High School. He was chosen as Montana's 2010 Preserve America History Teacher of the Year by the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History.
